MultiDrive's Free Cloning Features in Detail

How Exactly Does MultiDrive Software Clone Disks?

MultiDrive performs full bit-for-bit drive cloning, including free and unallocated space. It means that software sequentially reads every bit from a source drive and writes an exact copy of the bit in the corresponding sector of a target drive.

This creates an exact clone of the source drive's GPT or MBR records, file system(s), partitions, folders and files, including the hidden ones.

Pause And Resume Disk Cloning Tasks

When the disk cloning process is running, you can press the Pause button in the MultiDrive window to temporarily stop the cloning task and then resume it later.

MultiDrive carefully preserves all data without skipping or losing a single bit.

This feature might be useful when you need to turn off your PC or leave your workplace for some period of time.

Clone Multiple Drives In Parallel

To save time, MultiDrive can run multiple cloning tasks simultaneously to duplicate several drives in parallel.

Progress and status for each running and completed task is shown on the Dashboard.

Parallel disk cloning tasks can also be launched using the command-line interface.

Clone Drives with Errors and Bad Sectors

MultiDrive knows how to handle even damaged drives and correctly clones a storage device even if it contains errors and bad (unreadable) sectors.

Here's how drive errors are handled during the cloning process:

  1. If MultiDrive can't read some data sequence from a drive, the software sends a command to reset the drive's controller.
  2. Then the software gives the unstable drive some more time to respond and tries to read the data block again.
  3. If the second attempt fails, MultiDrive skips the block with error and proceeds with cloning the next data blocks.
  4. The corresponding 256KB block on the target drive is filled with zeros to keep the final data usable.

Specify Drive Partition or Sector Range for Cloning

Although MultiDrive is designed primarily to create a full disk clone, you can also duplicate only specified partition or sector range.

To do this, find the Options button on the Clone screen, select the range or partition of the source drive you need to copy, and click Apply. Then select the target drive and click the Clone button.

This feature is also available via MultiDrive's command-line interface.

Calculate Hash to Ensure Integrity of Drive's Clone

To make sure that the data on the drive's clone is absolutely identical to the source media, create its "digital fingerprint" by calculating hash value.

With this feature enabled in the cloning Options, MultiDrive calculates hash values of both source and target drives and compares them after cloning to ensure data integrity.

MD5, SHA1, SHA256, and SHA512 hashing algorithms are available for selection.

Mount a Target Drive After Cloning Is Complete

If you enable this feature in the cloning Options, MultiDrive automatically mounts partitions of the target drive to Windows after the cloning task completes.

This way you can start using the clone immediately.

Clone Drives Using Command Prompt (CLI)

For advanced users who prefer entering text commands, MultiDrive offers command-line interface for streamlined and automated drive cloning. The usage is as simple as that:

mdcli.exe clone [source] [target] <OPTIONS>

Check our detailed guide on how to clone disk from cmd >

Cloning features available through CLI:

  • Specifying number of bytes to clone (like 500MB or 1TB)
  • Starting byte offset for both the source and target drives
  • Automatic mounting of the target drive partitions
  • Hash calculation for integrity checks: MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512

Wipe and Repurpose an Old Drive After Cloning It

If you're planning to sell or repurpose your old drive after creating its functional clone, MultiDrive can securely and entirely wipe the old device for you.

First, make sure that your drive's clone is working correctly. Then, go to the Erase menu in MultiDrive, select your old drive and click the Erase button.

MultiDrive will irreversibly wipe all sensitive data from a media you're planning to sell, donate, or use yourself for different purposes.

Use MultiDrive's Portable Version to Perform Drive Cloning On Different Pc's

MultiDrive has a portable version that you can use without installation and run from any USB drive on Windows PC.

It has all the features of the desktop version and is completely free to use as well.

MultiDrive's Limitations in Drive Cloning

As a free tool, MultiDrive software has its limitations compared to paid disk cloning tools.

The main two cloning features that MultiDrive as a free tool lacks are automatic partition resizing after cloning a smaller drive to a larger one and so-called "intelligent cloning" (when you clone only sectors with data, excluding free disk space).

Partition Resizing After Cloning To A Larger Drive

If you're cloning a smaller drive to a larger one, MultiDrive won't automatically resize target drive partitions after cloning to span across all available free space on a new drive. You'll have to manually adjust the partition size of the cloned SSD. Check our detailed guide on how to do it.

Cloning Only Sectors with Data, Excluding Unused Disk Space

MultiDrive does not support cloning only sectors with data and will copy the entire drive, including free space. This way you'll get a complete clone of your drive, but it will take a bit longer.

Cloning a Single Source Drive to Multiple Target Drives Simultaneously

Using MultiDrive, it is not possible to clone a single source drive to multiple target drives in parallel. As the cloning process starts, MultiDrive disables both source and target drives for selection in its interface.

How Long Will It Take to Clone a Drive?

The device cloning time depends on:

  • Linear read speed of your Source drive
  • Linear write speed of your Target drive
  • Motherboard max transfer interface speed of used ports

Typically, HDD's are much slower than SATA SSDs, and NVMe's are the fastest ones.

Here's average estimated time for cloning different types of drives:

Why Did We Make MultiDrive Cloning Software Free?

Vitaliy Mokosiy, CTO at Atola Technology

Vitaliy Mokosiy
CTO at Atola Technology.
Works with data recovery and forensics-grade drive imaging for the last 17 years.

After 17 years of digging deep into drives, I got tired of seeing basic disk operations locked behind paywalls. Some companies killed their free versions, while others have hidden drive cloning in their paid tiers, and overall, it feels way more complicated than it should be.

One of my turning points was when I once tried to help one guy fully erase a USB drive on Windows 11. I was sure it should be simple but I ended up sending him a set of CLI commands via DiskPart 😭

Our goal with MultiDrive is straightforward: make disk operations simple enough that even my mum could plug in a USB stick and erase, clone, or back it up. Without ads, nag screens, and annoying upsells.

Will MultiDrive stay free in the future?

At Atola, we believe that managing drives should be easy and free. And if we ever introduce a Premium version in the future, rest assured that all the current functionality you rely on will stay free forever.

If it's free, how do you pay the bills?

There's no startup starving dev here behind MultiDrive. As a well established company with 22 years of experience in various B2B markets, we can allow ourselves try shaking the markets with the free software.

To pay the bills, we make high-performance forensic hardware imagers with data recovery capabilities. Most of our customers are businesses and organizations in the fields of digital forensics and incident response.

How We Tested MultiDrive Cloning Features

Tetiana Hrybok, Head of QA at Atola Technology

Tetiana Hrybok
Head of Quality Assurance at Atola Technology.
Has led software testing for drive management products since 2017.

Before the official release, MultiDrive was tested for 25 weeks by 6 seasoned QA professionals from our in-house Atola team. Also, more than 20 beta-testers volunteered to share their user experience to make the product better.

Unlike our premium specialized products for niche corporate markets, the free MultiDrive software is designed for the general public, meaning literally anyone with a Windows device could be using it.

Therefore, we tested this cloning software on the widest possible range of drives, covering combinations of various storage types (HDD, SSD), data transfer interfaces (SATA, SAS, NVMe, USB), capacities, and price tiers. Since users around the globe use a vast array of drive adapters and connection hubs, we've paid close attention to this aspect too.

We needed to make sure MultiDrive works correctly on various Windows builds (including Windows 11/10 and Windows Server 2025/2022/2019) and on all types of Windows devices from standalone PCs to laptops and tablets.

We've ensured that software performs reliably and fast on machines of every tier, from legacy home PCs to powerful modern systems in vast corporate networks.

And only after all necessary tests have been successfully completed do the QA team allow the release of the MultiDrive software to the public.
